In 2018 I started with Walter the Welsummer rooster along with my Whiting True Blue hens Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, and Private Benjamin to create my first “olive eggers”, which were more like light green eggers. They still laid very nice pastel eggs some with speckles and some with the heavy bloom, but they were not olive eggers.
The next part of the experiment was to bring in some BBS Copper Marans to try for the darker green and olive eggs. So far so good with crossing the Black Copper Marans and my Whiting True Blues.
For 2023 I will have a few options for those looking for a unique, colorful egg basket.
From my #2 Legacy Easter Egger Flock you will get about 75% of offspring that will lay pastel blues and light greens, and 25% that will lay lighter browns such as a nice peach tone. Many of the chicks will have crests.
My Back Cross Flock consists of a Black Copper Marans rooster in with various blue and green egg layers. This pairing will produce 50% of offspring that lay deeper greens and dark olives and 50% that will lay medium browns.
By this fall I should be able to have an F1 Olive Egger Flock set up with a Black Copper Marans rooster and Whiting True Blue hens. This pairing will produce 100% of offspring that will lay shades of medium greens and olives.
